To reflect our connection to both Europe and Australia, this will be a wedding in three parts. We hope this allows more of our friends and family to participate in our journey, without needing to travel great distances. Each stage will be inspired by the stages of a traditional Jewish wedding.
Until the middle ages, Jewish weddings happened in multiple stages, across multiple days. What we now think of as a Jewish wedding, used to be two very separate ceremonies called the Erusin and Nissuin. These would have been preceded by a Tena'im (engagement). At the Erusin the couple would be betrothed, but they would not live together until after the Nissuin, which could have been up to a year later. Because we're very traditional </sarcasm>, we will be separating out our wedding into these component parts, although we will also be following the principles and values of Humanistic Judaism and providing our own interpretation of the rituals. This history mostly provides us with justification for our reinvention of these rituals for our purposes.
The civil marriage will be registered in Oxford on the 12th of August 2022, followed by a garden party with high tea on the 14th of August 2022.
In Switzerland, we will have an outdoor wedding in the Alps and exchange rings on the 28th of August 2022.
Finally, we are planning to hold the final part of the ceremony on the 13th of April 2024 in Perth, Western Australia.
Come watch us stick these on.
